I always think a day is a lot of different things to people. It’s not enough hours, it’s endless, it’s Saturday, it’s lazy, it’s a workday, it’s leg day, Gameday, it’s a two hour delay, it’s a remote day, it’s a beginning.
It’s an ending.
The 365 days of 2020 were replete with all of the above and more, including the overwhelming sense of Groundhog Day – every day. Hence began my year long sojourn in limbo – not doing much of anything but sitting at my computer, using remote teaching as an excuse to quit everything else. It took a year of life, loss, and lessons for me to decide not to waste another day. That meant breathing new life into old projects and blowing the dust off my trusted notebook of ideas. It meant revitalizing some stagnant relationships with people I care about. It meant ending ones that suck energy from the air I’m blessed to breathe.
It also meant reawakening my sense of adventure. Not an easy feat in a pandemic world, but once I make up my mind, I find ways to make things happen. And even though they have to happen differently than they used to, that doesn’t mean they can’t be amazing.
My days are not perfect. I still have days I cry for no good reason. Days I compare myself to other people. Days I want to spend lying on the couch with my kids. Days I want to sucker punch the energy suckers, and days I question when the bad things will stop happening.
But they won’t stop. So I don’t stop. I take it one day at a time. I do things my own way. I accept all that a day can bring, I make sure my family and I have fun and get away, even when we stay close to home.
Let’s see where today takes us.
